Emerald athletics gets a running start

A LOCAL sports club has hosted one of their first events of the season earlier this month, seeing a great turnout despite COVID-19 restrictions.

The Emerald and District Athletics Association held their Home Carnival on Sunday, March 14, at Marist College.

The event included a great selection of events for kids to participate in.

The events included long jump, shot put, discus, javelin, turbo jav, and 60-, 100- and 800-meter running races.

Emerald and District Athletics Association President Cathy Chapman said it was a “fabulous afternoon”.

“We had 25 new trialists and many returning members come on the day,” Ms Chapman said.

“The kids still had a lot of fun, even though COVID-19 has changed a lot of things around the events.

“There was a lot of work behind the scenes in dealing with COVID restrictions and regulations, however, things have changed as of Saturday so hopefully it makes things a little easier for future events.

“Everyone helped out, but especially parents and coaches – they made sure every event ran smoothly.”
