Major flooding in Gemfields
Residents were evacuated from areas of the Gemfields as heavy rain caused major flooding overnight
GEMFIELDS residents are urged to stay safe as major flooding from torrential rain overnight sweeps throughout the area.
Over 200mm of rain fell into the Sapphire catchment last night.
Floodwaters are receding, but Anakie-Sapphire Rd remains closed between both Sapphire and Rubyvale.
All residents impacted have been evacuated.
Central Highlands Regional Council Mayor Kerry Hayes said Retreat Creek outside of Sapphire on the Capricorn Highway peaked at 9.8 meters this morning.
“The SES conducted one swift-water rescue, however I have been advised that everyone is safe,” he said.
“At this stage we have to wait until the water recedes enough to get into the area to inspect the situation, which I do not expect it to be for at least a couple of hours.
“The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting more rain to fall in the area this evening, so we urge anyone in the area to stay tuned to the local ABC radio for updates and follow instructions from emergency services personnel.
“As always, ‘If it’s flooded forget it’, don’t drive through flood water.”
Emergency services are on site and will continue to monitor the situation.
