Opal Street works Wednesday

Construction will take place on Emerald's Opal Street this week

By Morgan Burley

A SECTION OF Opal Street will be closed on Wednesday this week for road works.

The lane heading south on Opal Street from the Cliff/New/Opal Street intersection will be closed for about two hours from 9.30am for asphalt surfacing as part of safety upgrades around the Botanic Gardens entrance.

A Central Highlands Regional Council spokesperson said south-bound traffic will be detoured via New and Roberts streets while the lane is closed.

Once complete, the improvements will include widening of Opal Street and the introduction of an auxiliary turning lane to the southbound lane on the street for road users wishing to enter the gardens, improving safety to the entrance road to the Botanic Gardens.

The works are part of a suite of upgrades being carried out as council reconstructs the entrance road into the gardens.

An auxiliary turning lane, allowing a right turn into the gardens, will be added to the northbound lane on Opal Street when further asphalt and line marking works are done in September.

Notification will be provided closer to the date. Speed restrictions of 40km/h will be in place until this work is complete.

Please contact council’s customer service centre on 1300 242 686 with further questions or concerns.
